Welcome to our School Newsletter for Week 6, Term 2 2023.
As we reach mid-term, there are a number of highlights happening across our school. Over the past two weeks, we have acknowledged and celebrated National Reconciliation week. This has involved students taking part in a whole school assembly, flag initiative and activities throughout the week to learn more about First Nations culture, experiences and growing together.
Heritage Trades Program Launch

On Wednesday 31/5, we announced the launch of our Heritage Trades Program. We are working in partnership with FCTA, a renowned and family-operated RTO to deliver this program. This is an amazing opportunity for our students and their futures. This relates to a focus on Entrepreneurial Learning opportunities for our students that we are investing in across our school.
There has been lots of interest from students and families, as well as encouragement from the local and wider community. An acknowledgement and well done to Assistant Principal Jason Keep and Pathways Advisor Michael Scarman for their work ‘behind-the-scenes’ for this program. We look forward to the first group starting in Term 3 this year.
Congratulations Karen Bromley
Ms Bromley has received an award for Outstanding Contributions to Agriculture Teaching for 2023! This is awarded from peers in the Agricultural Teachers Association of South Australia (ATASA) and well deserved, reflective of the great learning programs Ms Bromley provides students. An acknowledgement to teacher Kerensa Greenfield, who nominated Karen Bromley for this award.
Re-Making Eringa: Social Initiative

A special mention and thank you to Mr Philip Holmes and Mrs Jean Holmes, for recently donating some original doors back to the school for our ‘Re-Making Eringa’ social initiative. Mr and Mrs Holmes purchased the doors during a school upgrade a number of years ago. We are grateful for their generosity.
Our Technology classes will work on restoring the doors, for eventual re-use in Eringa when it is rebuilt. This is an exciting opportunity for our students to be involved in the project.
Governing Council
A reminder that our next scheduled Governing Council meeting is on Tuesday 20th June, 6:30pm.
Have an enjoyable and relaxing extra-long weekend ahead. A reminder that there is no school for students on Tuesday 13th of June. Staff will be undertaking Professional Learning on this day.

On a cold wintry morning, the Kapunda High students and staff gathered together to celebrate Reconciliation Week. We held a whole school assembly on Monday 29th May and marked the end by making the Aboriginal flag as a whole school social action.
During the assembly the Aboriginal learner students led the school. Oscar Winkworth was a very capable compere, the KHS acknowledgement of country was presented by Connor Strangways and Jada Rigney. Chelsey Hamilton-Moderate explained the importance of Reconciliation Week. Imogen Holstead, Scott Holstead and Jaxon Tilmouth shared the meaning of Reconciliation Week to them.
Star Mind and Caitlin Both represented the Student Representative Council by presenting on the Voice to Parliament Referendum. It was a successful assembly where the meaning of Reconciliation Week was enacted by all members of the Kapunda High Community.
The making of the Aboriginal Flag was another excellent opportunity to participate in Reconciliation Week and despite the cold drizzly weather, students were very cooperative in making the flag.
Thanks to Mr Banks for flying the school drone and Imogen and Jaxon helping with the organisation of the flag. The whole school can be proud of our efforts to celebrate Reconciliation Week in 2023.

I was lucky to attend this year’s power cup. It was a great experience overall, this year we participated in 7 games, of those 7 games we won 4 of them. This was a fun experience.
My overall highlight of this event was seeing one of the kids I did workshops with last year, as it was nice seeing him again. Tyson inspires me as he is visually impaired. I look up to the amount of courage that he shows.

Kapunda High School Building Fund
The Kapunda High School Building Fund is up and running. If you would like to make a donation, now is an excellent time. Call the Kapunda High School Finance Team on (08) 8566 2203 ext. 4 and ask to speak with Meagan to make a tax deductible donation prior to the end of the financial year.
During Term 2, Year 11 chemistry students undertook studies of organic chemistry which involves looking at compounds of carbon and their applications in everyday life. Students looked at the structures, properties, and uses of hydrocarbons and the nature and importance of their polymers. Students became familiar with the international naming conventions for organic compounds and apply them to simple organic molecules.
The unit culminated in students making an ester heating butanoic acid and ethanol together in the presence of an acid catalyst. Students then separated their solutions and distilled off their ethyl butanoate ester making the science block smell like sweet pineapple to everyone’s pleasure.

On Friday the 2nd of June, Year 7/8 students travelled to Balaklava basketball courts to compete in the Schools Statewide Basketball Carnival.
The boys played against Balaklava High, St Joe's and Burra, finishing 2nd in their pool and making the final against Clare. Unfortunately, they lost this game but played very well as a team.
The girls played against Clare and Riverton, finishing 1st in their pool and making the final against Burra. The girls won this game and will go on to play in the semi finals in Week 9 against other school districts.
Special thanks to Year 12 student, Halle Zivic, who umpired a huge 7 games across the day.

The Year 12 students were very happy to receive their much awaited year 12 jumpers earlier this term. The jumpers provide our senior students with a sense of identity and pride as they embark on their final year of schooling.

German Exchange Student Hosting Opportunity
Louis is looking for a homestay for term 3 and term 4 in 2023. He is 15 years old, has excellent references and grades and is very enthusiastic about spending time in Australia. Requirements for homestay families are to provide bed and board. All members of the host family living with the student over 18 will need a Working With Children Check. The school is happy to support the applicants and is free. The school will also need to conduct a home visit.
If you are interested in hosting Louis please contact Scott Durand via email at scott.durand752@schools.sa.edu.au or (08) 8566 2203 ext. 0. This is a great opportunity to meet someone from a new culture and form a deep relationship that provide great opportunities in the future.

Japanese Exchange Student Hosting Opportunity
Kapunda High is excited to be offering the opportunity to host a Japanese student in early term 3. The students are coming from Tokyo and are affiliated with Meiji University.
Here is a link to some information in English about the schools:
They will be in Australia from July 27th until August 11th. The benefits of hosting a student are building a connection with another culture, creating the opportunity to build friendships, support with a Working with Children Check, and a small allowance to fund the homestay. You will also have access to 24/7 support. Homestay families are responsible for providing a bed (shared room is fine) and meals. Kapunda High School organises two excursions: one to the Gorge Wildlife Park and Whispering Wall and the second excursion is to the Central Market and South Australian Museum.
If you are interested in hosting a Japanese student please contact Scott Durand, the Japanese teacher at KHS via email (scott.durand752@schools.sa.edu.au) or via phone (08) 8566 2203 ext. 0.
