NAIDOC week
This week is NAIDOC week with the theme ‘For Our Elders’ and so we take this opportunity to acknowledge our First Nations Elders and their enriching contributions past, present and emerging. Recently on Tuesday 27th June we invited world-renowned musician and educator Scott Darlow to our school. Scott provided a performance at a whole school assembly, sharing a powerful message through his music and discussion of awareness, understanding and connectedness. He also provided tutorials and workshops throughout the day for a range of classes and groups. Scott’s performance and message was well received by students and staff, the second consecutive year he has joined us at Kapunda HS – thank you Scott.
Curriculum
Over the past two weeks students have begun the transition into Semester 2. This has included talking through subject overviews, topics for study as well as learning rules and norms. There have been interesting and engaging immersion activities across classes, forming great learning partnerships amongst students, peers, support staff and teachers.
Our Curriculum Prospectus for 2024 is under development and nearing completion, ahead of Pathways Counselling in Term 3. The Prospectus will be shared with our school community, along with information about Pathways Counselling early in Term 3.
In addition to core and elective subjects there are many enriching and exciting learning programs planned this semester for all students including: Long Home Group enrichment programs, the Heritage Trades Immersion program over Terms 3/4, School Agricultural initiatives, Youth Opportunities and Wellbeing programs.
Year 9 Ag students Tayla McCarthy, Tayla Weltman, Jessica Jones and Bianca Ball who won the Senior competition for the Cows Create Careers program.
Learning Technologies
In 2023 we have implemented our updated ‘Student use of Mobile Phones and Personal Devices’ policy. This has seen the restriction of mobile phone use, throughout the school day. This has been a big success for students and Kapunda High School, allowing the focus to stay on learning and teaching and minimising distractions. Well done to students and staff on successfully implementing this policy. Also thank you to our parent and caregiver community for your support in continuing to make this a success for our students and their learning.
The policy can be found on our school website at the link below:
From Semester 2 we are clarifying the use of the types of headphones for educational purposes at our school.
Wireless headphones (pods) will not be permitted for use at school.
Wired/corded headphones can continue to be used for educational purposes, under teacher direction.
Thank you for your support in this matter.
Transition to High School
Over the second half of term, we have been working through our transition to High School visits to current Year 6s at: Kapunda Primary School, Wasleys Primary School, Freeling Primary School and Roseworthy Primary School. This has included visits and input from the transition team: Assistant Principal: Middle School Ms Emma Oliver, Wellbeing Leader: Mrs Avylon Magarey, Year 7/8 Transition Manager: Mrs Nicola Winkworth, Year 7 Manager: Mrs Kim Poland and I.
We look forward to further opportunities to connect with incoming students and grow on our positive learning relationships over Semester 2.
School Uniform
We are undertaking student and parent/caregiver consultation around introducing a Rugby Jumper as an additional uniform option for our students.
A survey will be sent to parents/caregivers of students to provide input around two designs.
This is an optional uniform item. There is no requirement for families to purchase a Rugby jumper and existing school uniform options remain in-place.
From Week 6 Term 3 Monday 28th August, we will implement the SunSmart Policy – with hats being worn when outdoors. We’ll communicate and remind students about this during Term 3. Thank you for your support with this.
Term 2 has been a successful and enjoyable term, with high achievement for our students.
Have an enjoyable school holidays and I look forward to working in partnership with you in Term 3.

Japanese Exchange Student Hosting Opportunity
Kapunda High is excited to be offering the opportunity to host a Japanese student in early term 3. The students are coming from Tokyo and are affiliated with Meiji University.
Here is a link to some information in English about the schools:
They will be in Australia from July 27th until August 11th. The benefits of hosting a student are building a connection with another culture, creating the opportunity to build friendships, support with a Working with Children Check, and a small allowance to fund the homestay. You will also have access to 24/7 support. Homestay families are responsible for providing a bed (shared room is fine) and meals. Kapunda High School organises two excursions: one to the Gorge Wildlife Park and Whispering Wall and the second excursion is to the Central Market and South Australian Museum.
If you are interested in hosting a Japanese student please contact Scott Durand, the Japanese teacher at KHS via email (scott.durand752@schools.sa.edu.au) or via phone (08) 8566 2203 ext. 0.

Last Wednesday year 9 agriculture students attended an online presentation for Cows Create Careers to find out the winners for the different regions, in both the junior and senior competition.
Congratulations goes to the Fantastic Four group, who won the senior competition for the Barossa/Mid North. The girls placed first, along with Udderly Devine from Trinity College South. The girls from Fantastic Four did an amazing job creating a 3D safety model of different problems that could occur on a dairy farm. The girls have the opportunity to compete in the nationals later in the year.

The presentation was a lot of fun and students got to participate in some games, won prizes and finished off the session with snacks. A big thank you goes to SADA, Deanne, John, Nicki and Kylie – without them the competition wouldn’t run, Michaela Baker from TRAC for coming and talking to students about the Dairy Industry, and lastly Paula from Jersey Fresh for supplying the calves for the students to compete in this competition.
Fantastic Four – Jessica Jones, Tayla McCarthy, Tayla Weltman, Bianca Ball.

Reminder to all parents to please speak with their children around bus safety. Remind them it is illegal to take your seat belt off on the buses. Bus drivers have reported that students are undoing their seat belts just after the buses take off. They have asked them continually to keep them on, especially after the terrible bus accident a few weeks ago. It is no different than being in a car, seat belts must be worn at all times.
