It is with a mixture of happiness and sadness that we thank and wish farewell to our Business Manager Mrs Susan Coppin, who is on Long Service Leave for the remainder of 2023 with a view to retirement. Sue has been a key leader at Kapunda High School for many years and contributed countless ideas,
On a personal note, I’d like to acknowledge and thank Sue for her work particularly during our School Fire tragedy – both in the immediate fall-out as well as the sustained re-grouping efforts. While we still have a way to go with our school re-build, Sue has put in countless time, effort and energy into ensuring that we can.
We welcome Mrs Meagan Menzel into the Business Manager role for the remainder of 2023.
School Ag Team: Royal Adelaide Show
Congratulations and well done to all involved in the Kapunda High School Ag Show Team. The students and staff represented our school with great professionalism, enthusiasm and school pride. An acknowledgement to the hard work put in by the team, including:
Ms Bromley
Mr Jones and the Jones Family
Mrs Tess Vogt and the Vogt Family
Ms Greenfield
Ms Cummins
Mr Crowhurst
Also a special acknowledgement to Mrs Tess Vogt, who organised uniforms for the team.
We also acknowledge and thank sponsors NTS Rural and Johnson’s for their contributions towards the team uniforms.

Community Connections
Over the second half of this term, I’ve been pleased to organise two specially guided tours of the Eringa building for our Governing Council and also the Centenary Foundation, working with our Government Facilities management group Ventia. Strict safety protocols are observed during these tours. I look forward to offering further opportunities for our community to connect and be involved with various stages of the Eringa rebuild.
We are also ensuring that students are involved in every opportunity to learn and be part of the re-building process, including:
- Introducing a Heritage Trades skills program – where students have begun learning skills and will be involved with various stages of the rebuild.
- Establishing a School Exhibition space with student works produced about the re-build.
- Re-Making Eringa initiative – for our broader community to be involved in contributing to the rebuild effort.
- Other opportunities and projects which are in the planning stage.
Entrepreneurial Education Focus
We are continuing to broaden and grow Entrepreneurial Education opportunities for our students with a number of programs and initiatives across our school including:
- Kappy Brew Café – with accredited training, local products and student designed furniture, business plans and branding.
- A rich variety of School Agriculture Programs – including connections with local Agriculture businesses.
- University of Adelaide Roseworthy Campus – staff and student connections with a range of STEM programs and excursions.
- Exclusive partnership with the William Lakes Lifestyle Development by Villawood Properties – for students to learn how to plan and build a brand-new township and all of the thinking and careers involved in the process.
A number of other great initiatives are also mentioned throughout this newsletter, so I encourage you to take the opportunity to have a read through what our students and staff have been learning about.

The recent Adelaide Show marked a momentous week for Kapunda High School, with our students participating in a variety of competitions and learning experiences. In this newsletter, we're thrilled to share the highlights of our time at the show and recognize the remarkable achievements of our students.
Egg-citing Discoveries
One of the standout moments of the show was our participation in the schools' egg-laying competition. We were among the five trial schools that took part in this event, and what an eye-opening experience it turned out to be! Who would have thought that there's so much science involved in raising layer hens and producing eggs? We're proud to announce that we secured third place in the poster component of the competition, a testament to the dedication and hard work put in by Flynn Moten and Zac Trestrail for their poster presentation.

Dipping Our Toes in the Dairy Heifer Competition
This year, we decided to dive into uncharted territory by entering the Dairy Heifer competition. Although we didn't clinch a placement, it was an enriching experience for both our students and staff. We've gained valuable insights and knowledge, and we're already looking forward to making a stronger comeback next year.
Sheepishly Impressive
Our participation in the sheep competition was marked by determination and resilience. Despite not securing a place, our students performed exceptionally well in handling and competing with 225 sheep, making this competition one of the largest yet.
Goats Galore
The LED wether goat competition witnessed an all-time high in participation, and our school was right in the midst of the action. With four goats in the competition, we proudly secured second place with Leo in his chevon class, while Luke claimed fifth place in his class. It was a fierce competition, and our students rose to the occasion admirably.
Team Spirit and Support
Throughout the show, it was heartening to witness our students supporting and helping one another. The spirit of camaraderie among our students truly makes us proud. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Tess Vogt, The Jones Family, and Ms. Kerensa Greenfield for their unwavering support during the show. Their contributions were instrumental in making our participation possible.
Acknowledging Our Supporters
We couldn't have achieved this level of success without the generous support of various individuals and organizations. A special thank you goes out to JT Johnson and Sons, NTS Rural, Nutrien Beaton Agencies, Jersey Fresh, Andrew and Amanda Lock, Kapunda Chevon, Lindsay Meaney and Riverview Farm for their contributions.
Appreciating Our KHS Community
Lastly, we'd like to express our gratitude to the entire KHS staff for their support in any way they could, and to our students for representing our school with pride and distinction at the Adelaide Show. Once again, it was an outstanding year, and we look forward to many more successful endeavours in the future.

On Tuesday, week 6, five teams of year 7/8’s walked to Dutton Park to participate in the 9-aside football carnival. The carnival is designed to focus on enjoyment and participation. The students had a great day out and the weather was perfect for playing football. Other schools that participated included Burra, Clare, Riverton, St Josephs, and Eudunda.

Well done and thank you to the students that helped with coaching and umpiring. Another big thank you to the SRC for running the BBQ throughout the day.

Aboriginal Education Team Farewell
Kapunda High School recently farewelled our Aboriginal Literacy and Numeracy Tutor. Marisha Hughes had worked with us on a part time basis for 6 months supporting our Aboriginal Learners with their academic achievement. She had made strong relationships with our Aboriginal Learners and had a significant impact on their academic success. Marisha has moved onto fulltime work, and we wish her all the best with her future.
Luke Milera our Aboriginal Secondary Education Transition Officer has also taken parental leave. He has welcomed the birth of his daughter. We also wish Luke all the best with this exciting new chapter of his life.
Finally here is some artwork from Mrs Winkworths Y7 HASS class. It looks great.

Year 9&10 Basketball in Balaklava

This week, two teams of year 9 and 10 students travelled to Balaklava to participate in the Knockout Basketball Competition. Balaklava High School, Clare High School, St Joseph's Clare, Riverton High School and Eudunda Area School were all competing as well.
It was a warm day, with a slight breeze and very little cover on the outdoor courts. Despite this, our students played extremely well, with the girls team winning all four of their games, and the boys team winning three out of five of their games. The girls will advance through to the next round in Adelaide. Congratulations to all the students who competed! It was an excellent day out.

Randal and Debbie from SAPOL Crime Prevention
Randal and Debbie from SAPOL Barossa and Gawler District visited Kapunda High School on Monday 11th September to talk about life as police officer, and to provide insight into how understanding the law impacts on their work.
They visited the year 11 Legal Studies class, the students were able to ask questions to help build their understanding of work at SAPOL and to contribute toward their Inquiry assessment task. Randal and Debbie provided an excellent explanation of the juvenile justice system and explaining how restorative justice works to help young people make good life choices. This was incredibly powerful learning and I wish to thank Randal and Debbie for giving up some of their time and for SAPOL enabling them to visit and spend time with KHS students.

Some brand new aprons have arrived for use in our student enterprise Kappy Brew Café.
Student Amber designed the business logo featured on the aprons. This adds to other work students have completed in the café. Students made the Kappy Brew sign featured in the background and also the wooden bench. Coffee beans are locally sourced from El Estanco in Greenock and milk locally from Jersey Fresh.
