Snow Trip
Over Week 9 a delegation of students and staff travelled to Victoria for a Snow Trip.
This was a good opportunity for students to learn a new skill or further develop their skills in skiing or snowboarding. By all accounts this was a great experience for students and staff, joining with other schools Eudunda Area School and Tintinara Area School for the trip. An acknowledgement to Mr Nathan Brady, for organising the excursion which has been in planning for a year and also supervising staff Mr Mark Leslie and Ms Lisa Verrall.
Inaugural House Golden Event
In the final two weeks of school the inaugural House Golden Event was run by Mr Milne and the Wellbeing team. The event featured student leaders running events for students to undertake and earn points for their house. This was a highly successful event, with lots of great student leadership, team building and engagement. Well done to all involved. Congratulations to Kidman House, who achieved most points for the event. Also well done to Hughes and Hawke, who were within a close window of points.
School Holiday Tutoring Sessions
Over the Term 3 School Holidays there are a number of school holiday tutoring programs planned for Year 12 students. A copy of the timetable has been shared with students and families. I encourage students to make full use of these sessions, to help them maximise their achievement.

Community Wellbeing Big Breakfast

On Friday week 8, the KHS Golden Event was held. Students were encouraged to come to school in casual clothes in their house colours. Students took part in activities throughout the afternoon for a chance to win points for their house. Mr Milne and the SRC organised the day and ran events. The SRC also ran a barbecue at lunchtime. Much fun was had by all and the weather was perfect for an afternoon outdoors.

Year 8 Science Windmill Experiment
Winners of the windmill competition Jude and Henry with their windmill.
Students are currently studying Energy in class. This has resulted in a few very interesting practical activities such as setting fire to cheezels to heat up water, bouncing balls, measuring water splatters like the forensic scientists do and finally - making windmills! In this challenge the students had an hour to lift a 50g weight from the floor and bring it to the top of the table, using only the materials put on the bench for them. It was definitely an engineering feat for some of the groups! Keeley was our special judge and students had to explain to her what their challenge was and then show her. All the kids enjoyed themselves and most managed to pass the challenge. The winners of the day were Jude and Henry with their fantastic windmill!

The KHS Design and Tech workshop are looking for any hardwood timber you might have laying around. If you have have some hardwood timber such as Redgum, Jarrah, Oregon or Australian Oak and would like to donate it to KHS it would benefit our students. Our senior students in particular use a wide variety of timbers to create their projects, and we try to supply timbers suitable to their application. We also use hardwood timbers for wood turning projects which are mainly undertaken by our Year 9 and 10 students.

Student works
If you have any timber that you would like to donate please contact Paul Johnson by ringing KHS on 8566 2203 or on paul.johnson269@schools.sa.edu.au, alternatively you could get your student to catch up with one of the Design and Tech teachers in the workshop.

Tourism- Barossa Valley Seminar
The Year 12 Tourism class
Monday 18th September the Year 12 Tourism class completed their school assessment with a seminar hosted at KHS. The students represented businesses within the Barossa and then had to present to a group of visitors. The presentations were extremely well done, and I was super impressed with the professionalism.
A huge thankyou to the businesses who took time out of their usual workday to be interviewed by my students, and also to the ‘visitors’ who came on Monday night (Alison Schulz, Bec Holstead, Pepper Mickan, Liz Gary smith, Skye Harwood alongside staff, David Marino, Tim Jones and Dusty Mickan).
Congratulations to the Year 12 Tourism class, the final step in the puzzle is now the exam!

Another successful year for Kapunda High School Centenary Foundation
L to r: Barry Vogt, Liana Antonioli, Riley Menzel, Poppy Brady, Cameron Gerhardy, Tabatha MacKenzie and Stephen Ruediger.
A well-attended 16th Annual General Meeting of the Kapunda High School Centenary Foundation was held recently at the school.
Chairman Barry Vogt welcomed a number of sponsors, grant recipients and committee members who heard from a variety of speakers on the continuing success of the Centenary Foundation.
Mr Vogt advised that funds and vouchers had recently been received from RES Australia, Perrys Kapunda and the Kapunda Community Thrift Shop, which will be directed to grant recipients to help them with some of the expenses associated with making the move to tertiary education and training in Adelaide.
Mr Vogt also advised the healthy state of the Foundation’s Capital Base which is designed to eventually enable the Foundation to be self-sufficient and generate its own grant money.
Said Mr Vogt “We are pleased that in our 16th year of operation, we have facilitated the payment of over $400,000 to 125 Kapunda High School students. This has been possible because of the great community support we receive. The students have maximised their opportunities and gone on to achieve their goals.”
Treasurer Stephen Ruediger presented a very comprehensive Financial Statement for the year, showing a healthy Capital Fund and operating balance which had enabled around $30,000.00 to be paid out to grant recipients. A breakdown of claims indicated travel costs and investing in current technology comprised the majority of claims.
Four current students were present at the meeting and spoke on their experiences since embarking on their post-school journeys.
Cameron Gerhardy, is undertaking his second year at the University of Adelaide, studying for a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) – Electrical and Electronic, with a Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. He is enjoying involvement on campus and the opportunity to participate in a number of group exercises with fellow students. He currently has a part-time job to assist with his costs, with fuel being a major impost. The Centenary Foundation grant has been a considerable help in this area.
Liana Antonioli is in her first year of a Bachelor of Laws at the University of SA with a view to eventually becoming a Parliamentary Adviser and perhaps continuing on to become a minister in the government, with Education being a focal interest. Liana is currently employed two days a week in the Clare office of Penny Pratt the Member for Frome. She has become involved in the Law Society at uni and also continues to play footy. Centenary Foundation funds helped Liana purchase a laptop.
Riley Menzel, who recently received a Country Education Foundation VERTO scholarship, along with Centenary Foundation and TAFE funding support, is currently an apprentice with a local electrician, while attending TAFE for his Certificate 3 Electrotechnology qualification. Riley has been able to purchase a tool kit with his funding and is most appreciative of the Centenary Foundation support.
Poppy Brady was pleased to expand upon her long and often winding journey to achieve her goals to become a pilot. After a few well-intentioned starts through various flying companies, Poppy has now been accepted as a trainee pilot with REX Aviation in Wagga Wagga NSW where she will undertake extensive training to qualify as a pilot. Poppy expressed appreciation for the Centenary Foundation’s continuing support and encouragement.
Principal David Marino was invited to speak on school matters and was pleased to report on progress in the restoration and rebuilding of the school’s main building, “Eringa”.
Said Mr Marino, “Although the fire in “Eringa” was devastating, and a great loss, there are some positives to build on. Students are going to be involved in the re-build and will gain skills in Heritage Trades. This is a first in Australia and is being assisted with funds from the Construction Industry Training Board. Students from year 10 and 11 will commence their first project with the restoration of the original Coach House.
“They will then follow into the rebuild of “Eringa” and will become part of the story, as we develop part of the building’s basement as a museum. Student assignments and student-run tourist enterprises will ensure the spirit of this historically significant building is not lost.”
Mr Marino then presented an excellent visual on the state of the “Eringa” building showing the damage and proposed rebuild, which is hoped will be nearing completion in about three years.
Other aspects of the school were discussed and Mr Marino praised the good work of the staff and the growth of the school and its offering to students. Agriculture, in particular is increasing its profile and students are keen to be involved, as was evident at the recent Royal Adelaide Show.
The Election of Officers was held with David Marino in the chair. The following results occurred: Chairman – Barry Vogt, Deputy Chairman – Andrew Hayward, Secretary- Anne Hornsey, Treasurer – Stephen Ruediger, Public Officer – Stephen Ruediger, Committee: Maureen Altus, Des Ellis, Frank Ware, Clyde Hazel, David Marino, Tim Jones.
Re-elected Chairman Barry Vogt thanked all KHS staff members, committee members and sponsors for their continued support, before declaring the meeting closed.

Centenary Foundation Secretary
During week 9, a group of year 10 students, along with Mr Leslie, Mr Brady and Lisa travelled to Falls Creek for the snow trip. The trip is in partnership with staff and students from Eudunda Area School and Tintinara Area School. Students gained skills in snowboarding and skiing and overall had an excellent experience.

Agriculture Show Team Presentations
During Assembly on Friday of week 8, the Agriculture Show Team was presented with certificates and tokens of appreciation for their hard work in ensuring the Adelaide Show week was as successful as possible.
