Farewell and Good Luck to the Class of 2023
The year 12 cohort on their last official day of school.
During week 2 of this term, the year 12 cohort embarked on their last week of scheduled lessons. This is a celebration week as their secondary schooling comes to an end.
On Monday, students had a dress up day with the theme of 'groups'.
On Wednesday, the staff and year 12 students faced off in a badminton competition.
On Thursday, the students had an educational dress up day and wore uniforms relating to careers.
On Friday at recess time, the students were treated to a morning tea catered for by the staff.
After lunch, we had a farewell assembly where the rest of the school wished our Year 12 students well for their final assessments. The students received farewell certificates reflecting what they think they will be remembered for and also what their peers and staff think they are likely to be remembered for.
We are proud of our students and wish them well as they complete their secondary schooling.

Kidman Coach House Restoration
In recent weeks, the years 10 and 11 Heritages Trades students have commenced their restoration project on the Kidman Coach House. They have been learning stonemasonry skills in the lead up to this project, and were able to visit Burra, which is held as the standard for heritage conservation in Australia.

Students visiting Burra Heritage Building Sites.

Students learning stonemasonry skills under the guidance of FCTA expert trainers.
In week 3, the students were ready to start working on the Coach House. First, students chiselled out all the old lime in preparation for repointing.

Students then mixed new lime, and repointed the outer wall.

This concludes the first phase of the Kidman Coach House Restoration.
Well done to the students involved, and a very special thank you to Matt Hogg from FCTA for his expert guidance and dedication to our students. This is a promising beginning for the Kapunda High School Heritage Trades Program.
We look forward to seeing what future Heritage Trades students can achieve!

Mark Leslie- SANFL Community Football Awards

On Friday 3rd November, KHS PE Coordinator Mark Leslie was invited to attend the SANFL Community Football Awards. Mark had been nominated for school teacher of the year. The event was held in the William Magarey room at Adelaide Oval. Mark was a finalist for the award, congratulations Mark!
Most of the energy on the Earth's surface comes from the Sun, as electromagnetic radiation. Only a little energy comes up from inside the Earth, as heat.
Of all the Sun's radiation that strikes the planet, about:
- 30% reflects straight back out again
- 20% is absorbed by the atmosphere
- 50% is absorbed by land and sea
The radiation that reflects back out into space has no effect on the planet. The radiation that is absorbed transforms to heat, increasing the temperature of the air, land or water that absorbs it.
Albedo
White objects reflect light well, meaning that not much of the light is absorbed into the objects as heat. Dark objects reflect light poorly, meaning that most of the light is absorbed into the objects as heat. Albedo is the amount of radiation of all wavelengths that different surfaces reflect. Something that reflects no radiation at all has an albedo of 0, something that reflects all radiation has an albedo of 1, and something that reflects half of the radiation it is exposed to has an albedo of 0.5.
In Week 2, the Year 9 Science classes did an investigation using coloured paper, to demonstrate how colour influences albedo, measured by recording temperature.
As you can see, the students enjoyed being out in the sunshine and using their measuring and recording skills. It was determined that the black paper had the lowest albedo, followed by the coloured and white papers! It is always wonderful when the Science does what it is supposed to do too!

Stage 1 Food and Hospitality- Making Preserves

Mr Earle's stage 1 Food and Hospitality class have been making preserves this term. They've made dehydrated fruit, various flavours of jams, relish, dried pasta, pickles and biscotti. They've also packaged and designed their own labels for their products as well. Certainly a talented group of young people!
