INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS – AT LAST!
Last week our school hosted the Lower Mid North Athletics Carnival last week and achieved great success – winning three shields: Improvement, Boys Championship and the Overall Championship.
This is the first time since 1992 that we have won the Championship – ending a long period of Clare High School dominance.
Our track performance was particularly strong – exemplified by winning 6 out of 8 100m events and 6 out of 8 relays.
For the third year in a row, we won the Boys Championship, but it was great to see our girls ‘stepping up’ once more and giving Clare a run for their money in the Girls Championship.
Six of our students won age division medallions with three winners (Darcie Brown, Lane Curtis and Num Kasing) and three runners-up (Will Glen, Jacob Marsden and Amy Wilsdon).
I would like to especially acknowledge the excellent organisation of our Athletics Co-ordinator, Mr Mark Leslie – ably assisted by Mrs Megan Samain. Organising a team is one thing, but co-ordinating a whole carnival requires an enormous amount of work over a number of weeks.
Similarly, I would like to thank our Grounds staff (Steve O’Donnell and volunteer, Mel Coulter) for the preparation of the oval and set up and pack up of equipment.

END OF TERM ARRANGEMENTS
The final day of the term is Friday, April 13. Dismissal will be at 2:20pm.
Our SRC have organised for a themed casual day – inviting students to come dressed in 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s clothes – for a gold coin donation. ‘Op shops’ are a good source of items – or parents/grandparents wardrobes!
There will be normal lessons until lunch time. After lunch we will have our traditional final assembly followed by the distribution of written reports for all students.
At the assembly we will present our Personal Best awards for students who have gained ‘EXCELLENT EFFORT’ in all or most subjects across the term.
Term 2 will commence on Monday, April 30.
END OF TERM REPORT DISTRIBUTION
All Year 8-12 students will be issued with a hard-copy summary report at the end of the term.
Please note that with the exception of the Year 8 Arts/Digital Technology rotation, all grades are PROGRESSIVE and may only be based on a small number of summative assessment pieces.
This report should be read in conjunction with the DayMap continuous reports that are available through the Parent Portal. All parents have been emailed a log in and password. If you have misplaced this, please contact our IT Network Manager, Jack Mickan - dl.0779.ictadmin@schools.sa.edu.au or phone 08 8566 2203.
Through the Parent Portal, parents can access individual assessment results and read comments that highlight strengths and areas for improvement. Teachers have agreed to use DayMap to:
- Report achievement in all summative assessment tasks
- Provide a written comment for at least one substantial task each term – highlighting strengths and areas for improvement
- Publish results to students/parents within three weeks of submission
Reports will not be available before our final day assembly. The process of preparing, checking and making comments on reports is an extensive one that usually only concludes on the final day.
For students who are absent from school on the final day of school, they will be available for collection from Reception from Monday, April 16. Additionally, they will be able to be accessed via DayMap from that time onwards.
Please note, students who simply ‘stay away from school’ on the final day of school are not able to collect their reports on that day. Where students are genuinely ill, parents are welcome to collect reports after 2:30pm.
Parent-student-teacher interviews will be held in Week 2 of Term 2 at both Roseworthy (Tuesday, May 8) and Kapunda (Wednesday, May 9).
UPCOMING OPEN DAY
Our annual Open Day will be held on Sunday, 6 May (end of week 1, Term 2) and prospective families and interested others are welcome to visit, attend an information session and view various displays at the school.
JAPANESE HOST FAMILIES REQUIRED
We are seeking ten host families this year to accommodate visitors from Hachioji Junior High School in Japan. Hachioji students will arrive Wednesday, 25 July and leave Friday, 3 August 2018. Host families in the past have truly valued this experience.
‘It really was an invaluable experience for our family. We learned some of their language and culture and also shared our lifestyle and experiences with them.’ host family 2017
If you are interested in hosting a student or have any questions please contact Dani Ryan on 8566 2203 or via email Danielle.Ryan489@schools.sa.edu.au.
SCHOOLS MERINO JUDGING CHALLENGE
This competition is run by the Angaston Agricultural Bureau with Kapunda, Nuriootpa, Eudunda and Birdwood High Schools involved.
Students first learned about what judges are looking for when it comes to visually assessing hoggots. Then the students judged four similar pens of three sheep to place them from first to fourth for confirmation (shape/size). During this competition students also learning about wool scanning, electronic ear tagging and virtual fencing for sheep.
The knowledge and skills gained from this competition will be valuable in the lead up to the SA Merino Wether Competition held later in the year at the Royal Adelaide Show.

ONE PERSON, EACH DAY
Spray deodorants present a significant danger in our school environment to people who have asthma.
Strong smelling colognes and perfumes can also trigger a similar response, particularly when applied in confined places such as classrooms and hallways.
Unfortunately, some members of our community are still bringing them to school - perhaps under-estimating the impact that they can have on the health and well-being of others.
Spraying them in rooms or the vicinity of others is very dangerous as across Australia, on average, one person dies each day as a consequence of asthma.
Legal Studies Excursion
The Year 11 Legal Studies class was fortunate to be able to visit the Adelaide Legal Precinct on Wednesday, 14 March. We departed from Gawler Central train station at 7:45 AM in order to make it to the law courts bright and early. Luckily it was a beautiful autumn day with bright sunshine.
Our first stop was the Sir Samuel Way Building; home of the Adelaide District Court. We were able to sit in on sentencing submissions for a case involving commercial cultivation of prohibited plant. The defendant was facing up to 25 years in prison. The students were fortunate to be able to see both the prosecution and defence council make submissions for sentencing. The judge was an active participant in this process, asking the prosecution and defence council several clarifying questions and utilizing the judge’s associate to research quotes and sentences.
The second visit of the excursion was to the Adelaide Magistrates Court. The students were able to observe a large number of cases come before the magistrate. On this day, there were a large number of defendants brought up from the cells, including many who were remanded. Some defendants appeared via video link.
The Magistrate was very kind and great at multi-tasking. When he had the opportunity to explain to the students the processes of the Magistrates Court, he took the time to explain his decisions in some detail. This was of enormous benefit to see inside the ‘mind’ of the court.
Overall it was a great learning opportunity to experience the practical side of the subject. The students have been able to develop a greater understanding of the roles expected from a variety of people who work with the law industry including judges, lawyers, prosecutors, legal aid lawyers, sheriff’s officers and other court officials.
Doorways 2 Construction Plus
Year 12 students are making excellent progress at the Trade Training Centre. Students are currently working on tiling as part of the wet trades course.

Speak, Even If Your Voice Shakes
Well Being Leader, Lee-Anne Cummins gave a presentation at a recent assembly about the importance of seeking help if you are bullied or see bullying happening. Students watched a video of The Project’s Speak, Even If Your Voice Shakes featuring prominent Australians and later responded to questions about bullying statistics, with many students getting the correct answers. Students were then offered an opportunity to pledge to Stand Together by writing a pledge.
HAWKE CELEBRATES
Members of the Hawke House have celebrated their double win this year with a recent pancake morning. Students enjoyed their pancakes, made green for the occasion with green cordial. Aaron Hayward was surprised at the very strong taste when he thought he was polishing off the left-over cordial!
